Trio Conclave

Industries – Academia – R&D Institutions

This conclave is a very important program of BTF as one of the priorities of BTF is to foster a more vibrant and result oriented collaboration between Academia, R & D Institutions and Industries including MSME’s.

Collaboration between the R&D institutions, Academia and the industries, including the MSME’s is a crucial matter for the development of India.

  • How this can be made more effective, more result oriented?
  • How the facilities/ resources/ expertise in the govt (mostly) R&D institutions can be utilized to resolve the many technical and engineering issues faced by the industries?
  • How the Industries could participate in this regard?

These are very critical questions that need to be addressed.

As Bharat marches towards “atma nirbhartha”, the expectations from the MSME’s is also critical, along with the other industries in accomplishing the same in the technology arena. However, there is a gap. Most of the industries, especially, MSME’s lack proper awareness of the potentiality of the R & D institutions.

They live with the problems or seek sub-standard solutions, leading to downtime and connected financial losses. It is important to have more and effective collaborations between the three entities, so that the synergy results in a win-win situation.

Objectives of the Trio Conclave

  • Sensitize various players across industries on the need to focus on research and development in order to achieve “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”.
  • Inculcate R&D thinking across value chain and industries.
  • Expert-to-Expert (E2E) meets, where industry experts meet institution experts, to exchange ideas and challenges.
  • Create awareness among the industries including those in the unorganized sectors/ MSME’s about :
  1. the various research initiatives and achievements
  2. the various facilities available
  3. the various specialized and specific instruments, equipment etc under the various Government Research institutes like CSIR, DRDO etc.
  • Make MSMEs and unorganised sectors experience the benefits of R&D thinking and investments by :
  1. Enabling to identify the research needs of the companies.
  2. Encouraging MSMEs to bring out their problem statements.
  3. Efficient and effective utilisation of special equipment or expertise.

Interactions would be mooted to form a list of Problem Statements from the industries. This would be categorized under different verticals and presented as Challenges to the respective institutions.

BTF also intends to further handhold the MSME’s, to take this up further with the institutions for a timeline for solutioning and expedite the process until its fruitful conclusion. Thus, it would be an end-to-end process.

For this venture, we expect active participation from the R&D Institutions/Academia and Industries as below:

R&D Institutions / Academia

  1. Display their in-house capabilities including any sophisticated equipment etc at the venue.
  2. Participation of the domain experts in their institutes in the conclave

Industries

  1. Provide us with the details of their engineering and technical problems that they face.
  2. Participation of their Technical Officers (CTO) for presenting the issues at the conclave.

Reports

In countries like the UK, US, business sector investment in R&D is higher than the Government, while in India more than 55% is invested by the Govt, when compared with business sector and academia.

  • More than 1/3rd of R&D investment is focussed on Health(18%) and Defense(17%), while Industrial technology(9%) and education(7%) lags behind.

In countries like the UK, US, business sector investment in R&D is higher than the Government, while in India more than 55% is invested by the Govt, when compared with business sector and academia.

  • Emphasizes that more thrust should be given to R & D in industries for better quality and efficiency aspects.

India’s Gross Expenditure in R&D (GERD) score is just USD 43 per capita and is one of the lowest in the world, in comparison, Israel is at USD 2108, China at USD 325, even Mexico at USD 63 in 2018.

  • In Bharat’s march towards self-reliance, it is significant that more funds are allocated for R& D and this is achievable through a dynamic Public – Private participation.

India has published more papers than Russia and South Korea in 2016.

  • Necessarily indicates the immense potential of tangible conversions into valuable outputs.
